In a significant moment for cricket in India, the women’s national team made history by securing their first ICC Women’s World Cup title, triumphing over South Africa by 52 runs in an exciting final at DY Patil Stadium on Sunday night. Celebrations spread throughout the nation as BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia revealed a reward of Rs 51 crore for the players and support team, describing the win as a "remarkable success that will elevate Indian women's cricket." Meanwhile, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal praised the team’s groundbreaking accomplishment, comparing it to India’s legendary men's World Cup win in 1983. "Today is a significant day for Indian women's cricket. What the men achieved in 1983, the women have replicated today in Mumbai. This momentous victory will greatly enhance women's cricket in our country, and I believe the sport will now reach exciting new levels," Dhumal stated to IANS.
Earlier in the match, India batted first and scored an impressive 298 runs for 7 wickets, led by Shafali Verma's energetic 87, Deepti Sharma's steady 58, and important runs from Smriti Mandhana (45) and Richa Ghosh (34). A strong opening partnership of 100 runs between Mandhana and Verma laid the foundation for a high score before South Africa fought back towards the end, keeping India just below 300 runs. When chasing 299, South Africa started strong with Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt forming a quick fifty-run partnership. However, a precise throw from Amanjot Kaur ended Brits' innings, allowing India to take control of the game.
Young bowler Sree Charani made her mark in her first over by getting Anneke Bosch out LBW. Shafali Verma also excelled with the ball, making significant contributions by dismissing Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp in quick succession.
Deepti Sharma then delivered an astounding performance, achieving 5 wickets for 39 runs, which dismantled South Africa's middle order. Despite Wolvaardt's brave effort of 101 runs, the Proteas couldn’t keep up, getting all out for 246 runs in 45.3 overs, as India claimed a memorable 52-run victory amidst enthusiastic support from home fans. As the national flag flew proudly and the players hugged each other with tears of happiness, this moment signified not just a World Cup victory but also the beginning of a new era for women’s cricket in India.
