Rare snowfall in UAE

The United Arab is witnessing some of the coldest temperature in the regions in years. Residents of UAE have been enjoying the rare snowfall.

Over the weekend temperatures dropped to -5 degree Celsius in Ras Al Khaimah Mountains.

The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology said snow covered the normally hot and arid region up to four inches (10cm).

Social media was quickly flooded with pictures and videos of snowball fights Jebel Jais mountain on the UAE-Oman border. While Ras Al Khaimah sees snow each year in winter, heavy snowfall was unusual.

The last time UAE recorded heavy snowfall was back in 2009, when up to 8 inches snow covered the Jebel Jais.

The last time heavy snow was recorded was 2009, when up to 20 centimeters (eight inches) fell on Jebel Jais. One local told the UAE’s The National newspaper at the time that the weather was so rare the local dialect lacked words to describe it.

Local media reported while the snow fall became the reason for celebration in Ras Al Khaimah in Dubai. On 3rd February force winds ripped through the Dubai toppled a crane on the main road and sparked a fire that injured one person and destroyed three cars.

While parts of the International Dubai cycling tour race were cancelled as a precaution, the extreme weather appears to be over, with clear skies and temperatures of around 10 degrees expected in Ras Al Khaimah for the next few days.

For the rest of the week the coast and in Dubai, the temperatures are expected to remain above 20 degree Celsius.
