
A young Asian man in the UAE has been sentenced to two years in prison by a Sharjah Sharia court on April 20 for stealing a bird.
According to court documents the defendant in the case had been sentenced into two years in jail, to be followed by deportation.
The incident took place in July 2016 at the Umm Al Kuzma area in Sharjah. The accused in his early 20s, denied the accusation when he was confronted by the judiciary.
The accused claimed in front of presiding judge Hussain Al Ousovi that on the given day at around 7 a.m. he was working in the house of his sponsor, when he heard a sound behind a window. When he glanced through the window, he was surprised to see a bird that was unable to fly. Thinking the bird did not belong to anyone, he sold it in the market for Dh1,000.
Howsever, according to the police complaint lodged by the owner, claimed that the accused entered his house without permission and stole the bird.
The judge confronted the accused, who admitted that he sold the bird in the market, but denied the charge of theft.
The judge has adjourned the case and given the accused time to submit his defense before being sentenced on the eighth of next month.
