For several years, there have been speculations about Google working on a specialized first-party desktop mode for its Android smartphones and tablets, and it now seems that a launch could be imminent. A recent leak has indicated that this feature, known as Android Desktop Mode, was initially anticipated to be introduced with Android 16 this year, but there are indications it might actually debut alongside Android 17. It is believed to provide functionalities akin to what is offered by Samsung DeX and Motorola Connect, allowing users to resize application windows and smoothly switch between a mobile interface and a desktop setup. Mishaal Rahman, a well-known tipster, shared insights about Android Desktop Mode during a recent livestream on X, formerly known as Twitter. This upcoming desktop experience is expected to allow users to leverage larger screen sizes when connecting their Pixel phone to an external display, like a laptop, through a USB Type-C cable, resulting in a desktop-like interface.

Android Desktop Mode is rumored to support multitasking, featuring functionalities such as window resizing and rearrangement. Additionally, it may incorporate essential desktop elements, including a system for managing apps, smooth transitions between mobile and desktop interfaces, and various navigation tools. The feature was previously believed to be part of Android 16. In fact, the latest beta update for Android 16 introduced a developer option labeled "Enable desktop experience features." When activated, this capability showcased a standard Android taskbar, options for three-button navigation, and other tools when a Pixel device running this beta was connected to a laptop. However, its launch may be postponed. According to Rahman, Google requires additional time to refine the user interface for this feature, which means it might not accompany Android 16 after all. Instead, it is now projected to be unveiled with the anticipated Android 17, aligned with the next generation of Pixel devices.

Earlier reports have indicated that this desktop mode may also feature a taskbar that allows users to pin apps such as Phone, Messages, Camera, and Chrome, along with an app drawer. It might further showcase a list of recently used applications.
