The company that makes iPhones, Apple, has promoted Sabih Khan, who is of Indian descent, to the role of chief operating officer, as announced on Wednesday. Khan, who will succeed Jeff Williams in this position later this month, has been with Apple for three decades and became a member of the executive team as senior vice president of operations in 2019. He was born in 1966 in the Moradabad area of Uttar Pradesh and studied until fifth grade before his family relocated to Singapore. "Jeff Williams will hand over his chief operating officer responsibilities this month to Sabih Khan, Apple’s senior vice president of operations, as part of a succession plan," Apple stated in a release. Williams will keep reporting to Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, and will continue to manage Apple’s top design team and the Apple Watch, along with the company’s health programs.
After Williams retires later this year, the design team will start reporting directly to Cook. Khan has been responsible for Apple’s supply chain and manufacturing processes. Regarding Khan’s promotion, Cook commented, "While managing Apple’s supply chain, he has played a key role in developing new technologies in advanced manufacturing, overseen the growth of Apple’s manufacturing capabilities in the United States, and helped Apple respond quickly to global challenges. "Before joining Apple’s procurement team in 1995, Khan worked at GE Plastics as an applications development engineer and technical leader for key accounts. Khan completed his schooling in Singapore and then moved to the United States, where he received a bachelor's degree in economics and mechanical engineering from Tufts University, as well as a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
